Courseware Newsletter Training Options for the IT Professional: Sorting Choices and Weighing Best Options

In good times or bad, successful companies continue to invest in their most important asset--employees. Business experts, including Stephen Covey and Dale Carnegie, tout the importance of ongoing employee training and include personal development as standard elements of their management advice systems.

Employees are rejuvenated by time away from the day-to-day routine and the new ideas that always arise during a successful learning experience. Most importantly, ongoing training is your only insurance in a constantly changing competitive landscape.

But successful training doesnt happen by accident. Maximizing your training investment requires knowing your desired outcome in advance, making sure employees are prepared for training, and not letting the learning go unapplied when your employees have left the classroom. As the organization paying for training, you also should shop around, check into the backgrounds of the firms, and use “win-win” deals outlined at the end of this document. Most importantly, you need to understand the strengths and weaknesses of training options available today: instructor-led instruction presented live in a classroom; instructor-led instruction offered over the Internet, sometimes called virtual training; e-learning; and blended learning, which is a combination of the any of these options. The bottom line: staying relevant as an IT professional means staying on top of new software technologies.

Organizations vying for a place in the global marketplace also must commit to ongoing training for IT professionals within their companies – or risk falling behind more tech-savvy competitors. On these facts, most of us can agree.

But what type of training is best? In a world where selecting a cup of coffee can require nearly a dozen decisions to get it “just right,” selecting the best IT training opportunity – in which many vendors offer divergent options -- can seem downright daunting. Not to mention the varying claims, with some vendors insisting only their “brand” of training, whether live or web-based, is the only way for IT professionals to achieve effective learning. Others tout “blended learning” as the key to training success.

This white paper will describe and analyze the various training options available today for IT professionals. It will present both the positive attributes and potential liabilities of each training option, letting readers decide for their respective organizations and individual employees which option or options are best -- based on facts, not opinions or one-sided marketing claims. No matter what type of training delivery is selected, however, understanding how to evaluate quality training is key.

This white paper also will examine the common criteria for reputable training, which applies to all training options. Employers and individual employees should be aware of these criteria and how effectively individual vendors meet the criteria before selecting a training vendor.
