Courseware Newsletter The Politics of Business Leadership (Part 2 of 2)

(Continued from previous monthly newsletter) What is problematic, however, is the CEO who tells employees the company will never be sold, only to turn around and tell shareholders a deal is in the works.

In this era of instantaneous communication it's impossible for any "targeted" message to stay secret for long. In fact, a surreptitious video is likely to turn up on YouTube courtesy of someone's cell phone faster than a CEO can say "golden parachute." Once that happens, a leader's credibility is shot.

Communication may just be the most important skill of any leader. Far from being a hindrance, the ability to inspire others through words may be the single most important hallmark of all the greatest leaders.

"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself," uttered by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt as the United States endured the Great Depression, is a prime example of leaders appealing to the best in our natures.

His leadership inspired many during some of the darkest times in our nation's history. President Roosevelt could have fanned the flames of fear and used the situation to justify a grab for power. He did not and his legacy as one of our greatest leaders has stood the test of time as a result.

Leaders also stand up and deal with difficult issues. Maybe you didn't agree with Barack Obama's bold speech on race, but most can agree that he took a political risk by addressing such a controversial and potentially divisive topic.

What he didn't say in that speech actually spoke volumes, at least to me, about the type of leader he might be: someone who stands up to tough issues, isn't afraid to address controversy, takes the high road and doesn't try to turn one group against another for political gain.

Maybe it sounds quaint, or downright old-fashioned, to suggest that leaders should be authentic, respectful, honest, positive and effective communicators. It's easy to get cynical and believe the tail, indeed, is wagging the dog.

But I'm hoping at least one of our presidential contenders has the right stuff and the rest of us are alert enough to give him or her the chance to prove it in the White House. And while I'm making my wish list, I'm going to boldly suggest that business leaders hold themselves to the same standards we expect in our political leaders.
